A letter to prospective swimmers
I hope that you are having a successful academic year and swim season to this point. I can imagine that this being your last year you may be getting a case of senioritis. I can tell you many of the college seniors are feeling the same. Right now our senior swimmers are concerned about what they will do when they graduate, the fear of the unknown. In your search for the right college, you might be experiencing the same concerns. What is best for me?
In terms of the educational experience here at Ohio Wesleyan, it is a top liberal arts institution. You will get a well rounded education being challenged in all areas of study; from university requirements to your major courses. As a faculty member, I know the rigors of your academic life here at Ohio Wesleyan. When you have mid-terms, so do I. They say this is an institution that changes lives; well I believe that is true. You will get to know many other students from around the country and world; you will get to know your professors and you will definitely get to know me. All of this will help you with your journey.
The swimming program is an experience that I have always believed will help shape you for the rest of your life. Time management is crucial and it takes commitment, fortitude, strength, perseverance, balance, self discipline and a love of the sport. We work hard in and out of the pool and are known on campus for being some of the best students. We are also known by the schools we swim as being confident while good sportsmen and women. I know that this program has produced many great swimmers; but more importantly it has produced many who still love the sport. I am very proud of the fact that a large number of my swimming alumni are now coaching themselves. There are four currently coaching college teams around the country. Several are working in USS programs from California, to Colorado to Ohio.
Recently, as I sat at the Central Ohio District Swim meet: I watched and smiled as five of my swimming alums , now coaching high schools in the area had some laughs talking amongst themselves on the pool deck.
I hope that Ohio Wesleyan can become one of your top choices. If our program has produced so many that continue in the sport today, you know they had a great experience as a student-athlete at Ohio Wesleyan. Oh yea, and maybe learned a thing or two from their coach.
