Pakistan
2007 Governors Cup Swimming Championships:
PlaceNameOhio PlaceNameWesleyan PlaceTypeUniversity freshman Syed PersonNameUsman Javaid competed in the 2007 country-regionplacePakistan Governors Cups Swimming Championships at the end of June 30th thru July 3rd. This is the big warm-up meet prior to the Pakistan Nationals. Usman helped his team to a second place overall, competing in three relays and two individual events.
Individually he won gold in the 200 meter freestyle (2:09.44) and silver in the 200 meter IM. He swam on the 400 meter freestyle relay, clocking a 57.4 just a few tenths off their national record. In addition he put in a great 100 meter backstroke leadoff for their 400 medley and had the fastest 200 meter split of the meet in their 800 meter freestyle relay.
Usman was asked to join the Pakistan National Team but had to turn them down due to his returning to Ohio Wesleyan this fall. In response to his great performances, the other teams complained to the Pakistan Swimming Federation that they were not ready to compete in the nationals scheduled for early August and that needed to be moved back to September or October. It became apparent that they were scared of what Usman could do knowing that we had only rested him for four days prior to the Governors Cup. It seems very likely now that the National meet will not even take place in the midst of the ongoing extremist attacks in placecountry-regionPakistan. I am anxious for Usman to return to Ohio Wesleyan where it is a tad bit safer.
Muncie Indiana
2007 Muncie Endurathon:
placePlaceNameOhio PlaceNameWesleyan PlaceTypeUniversity freshman PersonNameDavid Gatz successfully completed the Muncie Half Iron-man Triathlon on July 14th. David placed 6th in his age group and 229th overall with a time of 5:41:06. David had a goal in mind to complete a half iron-man triathlon this summer so we devised a training program and David went for it. Needless to say, he was rather scared going into the event never having done anything of such length. Following the advice of not trying to race the event and stay within himself paid off. So hats off to David for completing a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1mile run.
Delaware Ohio
Superior Academics:
Once again the Ohio Wesleyan Swimming & Diving Teams were outstanding academically. This spring the men's team GPA was a 3.485 and the women moved up to a 3.35. Most amazing, a team of nearly 40 individuals has a combined GPA of 3.41.
placeCityDelaware StateOhio Racing Club:
This spring I once again began a new United States Swimming Club, the Delaware Ohio Racing Club (DORC), yup! I also have branched out to becoming a placecountry-regionUnited States Masters Swimming Club as well as a U.S. Triathlon Club. Things have gone well for the first season and membership should grow once word gets out. This entity helps fund placeStateOhio Wesleyan Swimming & Diving, employing currents swimmers to help pay for the winter training trip. In addition, funds generated go towards buying equipment and other vitals for the college swimmers. Our parents group from DORC has already inquired about helping with the college team by putting together goodie bags for them on our away meet days, how cool is that. Most important is the recruiting potential from such a program, it has proven to be a real success for us.
A Sad Day:(
This summer marks the end of an era, the Elizabeth King era. Liz has stepped down as our assistant to take on some new challenges and responsibilities. She will not be totally gone because, she has asked to help out when she can with various team activities. I will miss having her around and keeping me sane during the school year.
A Happy Day:)
Well, the inductees for the Athletic PersonNameHall of Fame have been announced. One of our own, Molly (Kuhlman) Haberbusch, is being inducted this October. Please, if you can come for homecoming that weekend, October 27th, let us know.
In addition to the PersonNameHall of Fame induction on October 27th, we have a home swim meet against Denison starting at 11:00am (I know that is early), and our annual alumni meet at 3:00pm that same day. That means the college swimmers will be tired from swimming against placeCityDenison, so take advantage…
Facebook
A year or so ago I had an idea brought to me by Fred Orr, an Ohio Wesleyan Swimming Alumni living near CitySydney in placecountry-regionAustralia. He wanted to know if there was a way that we could get something on the web where swimming & diving alums could get reunited or acquainted or just find out what others are up to. Well now we can; thanks Fred!
All you have to do is go to http://www.facebook.com/ and sign up. Once you are a member and set up your profile you can look up the official group as named above and join. In addition, you might run across old friends and can become friends with them. This is a great way to keep in touch.
I will be posting what is happening with the current team on a regular basis, it is much easier and less time intensive for me than sending email to each of our alumni. So you can keep tabs on what is going on with the team.
In addition, I would invite all of you alumni that have stories or news to post these so all can see. Please, be careful what you put on the site, it is there for the whole world to see.
