Delaware Ohio Racing Club is a small United States Swimming
club started fourteen years ago by Richard Hawes, previously
known as Delaware U.S. Team. The original purpose for starting
the club was three fold. First, to give a small group of
year-round competitive swimmers a local place to train.
Second, was to help fund Ohio Wesleyan Swimming and Diving.
Third, an attempt to attract competitive swimmers to Ohio
Wesleyan. Since then, we have added a few more. Fourth,to
instill the correct age-appropriate training, not just
swimming a lot of practices and yards. Fifth, to train
young swimming coaches who would like to pursue this as a
career.
The club has called Ohio Wesleyan University its home
since inception. Because Ohio Wesleyan is a private
institution, the pool nor any other facilities on campus
are public. Ohio Wesleyan has been very gracious to allow
DORC to use the facility. Because the money from the
program either goes to the young coaches or directly into
the Ohio Wesleyan Swim Team budget, it is a non-for-profit
club.
Each season we face challenges: will there be time,
space or enough coaches to run this program correctly? This
fall there will be even more challenges due to the increased
size of the OWU Swimming Team.
Therefore, at this time DORC will not be adding new members
for the fall/winter season 2008-09. We will know more at the
beginning of September about the possibility of new members
The next few years before the new OWU pool is built will be
challenging, but I am looking forward to when we have more water
time and space.
