Career prospects are bright for students with strong training in Mathematics and/or Computer Science. Thus is especially true for students in computer science, where graduates find abundant opportunities to work as professionals in the computing industry and for students who supplement their mathematics major with concentrated study in allied disciplines.

Candidates with training in statistics are regarded highly by prospective employers in manufacturing, business, insurance, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and numerous government agencies including the National Institute of Standards, NASA, Bureau of the Census and the National Institute of Health. A sampling of professional opportunities includes statistical quality control, market research, finance and actuarial science.

As the list of recent graduates shows, students in mathematics education have been very successful in finding rewarding teaching positions. Of course, further training is always a possibility. Many mathematical science students enter graduate school to work toward the M.A. or Ph.D. degree in mathematics, computer science, statistics or in any one of the allied fields including economics, physics, biology and business.

What Our Alumni Have to Say

"I feel prepared to meet the challenges I will face (and have already faced) as a consultant. I am required to be able to adapt my base skills and knowledge of computer science to various technologies and applications, and I feel you have helped teach me to do so. Also, I would not have been offered my current job without the impressive education I have gained with the help of your hard work. Brent Sickmiller '08
Solutions Developer for Leading EDJE
"The commitment to undergraduate instruction and the small course size at Ohio Wesleyan makes a big difference. The courses are more in depth and are designed with the strengths and interests of each individual student in mind." Dan Goldbaum '00
Ph.D. program in Physics at The Ohio State University
"Besides my math major, I got a liberal arts education that prepared me well for medical school. What I'll remember most about OWU is the lifelong friendships I formed with peers and faculty." Steve Sanderson '89
Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Cincinnati, '97
Duke University Medical Center Resident
"One of the most noticeable things about the department is its relatively small size. The benefits that come with this are obvious: small class sizes and more individual attention. The professors are very knowledgeable, yet approachable and down-to-earth. They obviously enjoy teaching and work hard to keep the program challenging and interesting. Majoring in math required a lot of hard work, but was a great experience. I graduated with confidence in my training and looked forward to learning more." Joni Baker '94
Ph.D. candidate in Mathematics at University of Wisconsin
"The program at OWU gave me an excellent broad preparation for graduate work at Cornell. Some of my friends who graduated from larger schools had more advanced courses, but the friendliness of the department, accessibility of the faculty and the overall academic environment at OWU more than made up for this. I highly recommend this program for anyone interested in the mathematical sciences, whether or not they are thinking of going to graduate school." Eknath Belbase '92
Ph.D. in Mathematics at Cornell University, '98
Senior analyst with Andrew Davidson & Company
"OWU's Mathematical Sciences faculty challenged and encouraged me. Thanks to them, my education has proven to be competitive with that of students from larger and more prominent schools. I am grateful to them for their efforts as teachers and mentors." Shriram Krishnamurthi '93
Ph.D. in Computer Science at Rice University, '00
Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Brown University
"The OWU Mathematics and Computer Science Department provides a challenge for sure, but without intimidation. The professor-student relationship in the department is among the best on campus." Hao Jiang '94
Vice President at Credit Swiss First Boston, New York City
"My fondest thoughts about OWU are associated with the faculty and staff of the MathSci department --- I always found my professors to be inspiring teachers and good friends. This made for a great academic and classroom environment in which I found it easy to involve myself. In short, very strong department, very good curriculum and very good people. Two thumbs up." Rajesh Raman '95
Ph.D. program in Computer Science at University of Wisconsin
"I am extremely grateful to the professors of the MathSci department for teaching me the fundamentals of the subjects, for encouraging me in my interdisciplinary projects, and most of all, for imparting to me the ability to think critically in a wide variety of situations." Ram Samudrala '93
Ph.D. in Computational Biology University of Maryland, '97
National Science Foundation/Burroughs Wellcome Fund Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Program in Mathematics and Molecular Biology at Stanford University
"The qualities of the department that I appreciate the most, now that I look back, are the accessibility of the faculty, the close interaction, the small classes and the opportunities for leadership and team-work. I remember two experiences the most: one was becoming involved with the Student Chapter of ACM and the other representing OWU in local and regional programming contests. These experiences taught me to be a self-starter, a self-learner and a good team member. These are qualities that are essential in today's fast-moving software industry." Eddy Wong '91
M.S. in Computer Science at Brown University
Director, Open Sesame Computer Software in Cambridge, MA
"The Ohio Wesleyan math program is great. The courses are challenging, but the faculty are very supportive. I obtained a strong background in mathematics which I use everyday in my teaching." Elaine Humes '95
Mathematics Teacher at Olentangy High School in Delaware County, Ohio
