10/7/09: From this date henceforth, I do declare that all exercises, exams, and
assorted suchnots, and miscellaneous wassnames, noted as due to me in digital form (PDF or Word doc), mustforth be recieved
and/or received (however you choose to spell it) by me, John Krygier of the email address
jbkrygier@owu.edu, by 9:00 am of the noted date of dueness. I also declare, forthwith and
from this henceforth day, that you must only send complete exercises/exams and not be
e-bothering me with incomplete exercises nor exercises sent out to me, on the internets,
known to some Alaskan Republicans as "a series of tubes," in a series of parts, not coagulated
within one document, yet spread about in many multiple documents. Upon receipt or reciept of such
multitudinous parts within said e-mails, you shall and mustwithforth place within my possession, within
the provided large martini/tip glass, of approximately 1 foot tall, provided to me, as a gift, by my second and better wife, a bill of one dollar,
hencealong known as the nuisance

Maps are essential and powerful tools. Digital maps on the World Wide Web and in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow more and more people to make and use maps to analyze data in sophisticated ways. GIS applications are found in business, the natural sciences, the social sciences, urban planning and management, and scores of other fields. Geography 222 is an introduction to maps and cartography, with an emphasis on their role in GIS and on the WWW. Major topics include data sources, the map abstraction process, "map infrastructure" (scale, projections, reference systems, accuracy), map types, use, and interpretation. Course material covers technical and social issues as well as applications. Students will make many different kinds of maps over the semester using WWW map-making sites. Geography 222 serves as an introduction to courses in cartography and geographic information systems (GIS) offered by the Department of Geology and Geography, including Geography 353: Cartography and Visualization, and Geography 355: Geographic Information Systems.
