American Studies Major

Spanish language: 254 or 255 Conversation-Composition (preferably
255) Plus 2 of the following:
MFL 300.4 - Mexican Literature and Popular Culture
MFL 352 - Intro to Lat. Am. Literature
MFL 362 - Lat. Am Poetry & Short Story
MFL 364 - Lat. Am Novel within its Culture
Cognates: 3 of the following selected from 2 or more departments
Econ 353 - Economic Development
Econ 372 - International Economics
Geog 345 – Economic Geography
PG 344 - Comparative Political Topics: Democratization
PG 361 – American Foreign Policy
Phil 310g – Global Ethics

Students must also participate in an off-campus study program in a
Spanish or Portuguese speaking country, preferably in Latin America.
Students are encouraged to spend at least one semester abroad, but an
approved summer program can be substituted. With prior approval,
students may apply 3 off-campus courses towards major requirements, the
allocation of which will be determined by the LAS board.
Students
must prepare a senior thesis of roughly 25 to 30 pages. This research
paper may be completed as part of a course in which the student is
enrolled or as an independent project with a faculty member.
Regardless, the paper must be approved in advance by the LAS board and
will be read and evaluated by a panel of three or more faculty members
from at least two departments.
