In
his October 18, 2007 talk titled "Local Events, Global Outcomes:
Contemporary Mexican Migration," Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, Associate Professor
of Anthropology at Ohio State University, spoke about the causes and
consequences of migration, both internal and international, of Mexicans
from the southern state of Oaxaca. Cohen outlined the local
factors which pushed Oaxacans to leave their communities in search of
higher standards of living, sending them to other parts of Mexico or to
the United States, especially Los Angeles. Professor Cohen also
commented on recent social, political and economic disturbances in
Oaxaca sparked by the 2006-07 teacher union's strike. Interviews
conducted by Cohen of rural Oaxacans suggest that the fallout of the
violent confrontation between activists and the Oaxacan Governor has
driven more Oaxacans to choose migration. Discussion followed the
talk.
