Delta Zeta at Ohio Wesleyan University

Why Go Greek?

Delta Zeta sorority is a social organization, however many people misunderstand this term because they limit it to social functions such as parties and social gatherings. These events are certainly one part of sorority life, but there are many other aspects involved in being a member of a sorority.

  • Friendship: The friends that you make in a sorority are lifelong friends. The bonds that unite you are not severed by distance or time, and are renewed each time you meet. It is easy to talk to these friends, and you know they will understand you. These friends provide support and encouragement, while enriching your college experience.
  • Scholarship: The most important part about coming to college is getting a good education. Delta Zetas exhibit high ideals and standards in academics. Each member must meet certain scholastic requirements to be initiated, including a 2.5 cumulative G.P.A. Delta Zeta strives to help each woman reach her potential through programs such as study tables, and an upperclassman mentoring. The aforementioned help improve study skills and time management abilities.
  • Service: The Greek system prides itself on service to others; events are constantly being sponosored to support other Greek philanthropies. Delta Zeta has a long history of community service. Our national philanthropy is assistance to the deaf through service and gifts that we create. Delta Zeta supports the work being done by Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. - the only college in the world devoted exclusively to the needs, instruction, and training of the speech and hearing impaired. Other related organizations are supported by individual chapters (for Alpha Rho, it is the House Ear Institute). Another popular philanthropy event Delta Zeta hosted was writing letters to soldiers overseas. You give as much as you get from service to others!
  • Growth: As a member of a sorority, you will have the chance to learn about yourself and others. Delta Zeta gives you the opportunity to build character and discover your unique abilities. Through personal growth, you also learn tolerance and acceptance for others who may have different beliefs and practices than your own.

The Recruitment Process

In the fall, each of the sororities at OWU host various Recruitment events. These events are open to all unaffilated women and are designed to give you a chance to get to know the women of each of the five sororities. Upperclassmen are invited to participate in Informal Recruitment in the early fall as well.
Late in the fall semester, sign-ups for Formal Recruitment will begin for ALL unaffilated women interested in joining a house. To be eligible to go through Formal Recruitment you must have a 2.5 GPA for the most recent semester you attended at OWU and be a full time student (so for Freshmen women this means you must obtain a 2.5 if your first semester at OWU and for transfer students you must have attended OWU for a full semester and obtained a 2.5). Prior to
Formal Recruitment sign-ups, the governing body of the sororites, the Panhellenic Council, will offer information sessions providing more information on the Recruitment process and Greek life itself.
All girls who sign up for Formal Recruitment and meet the requirements will go through Formal Recruitment the first week of the spring semester. Formal Recruitment usually takes
place on a Thursday-Sunday schedual with Bids being handed out on Monday night. For more information on what a bid is and Formal Recruiment itself, you should check out the  OWU
Panhellenic Website, or email the Webmistress at the link below.
