On-Site Career Library

Many resources are available in our Career Library, which is located in our office in the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, Room 324. The library is organized and labeled for self-service and contains the following kinds of information:

Free Informational Handouts
(including materials on resume writing, cover letter development, and interviewing)

  • Career Exploration Materials
  • Job Search Resources
  • Employment Opportunity Listings and Directories
  • Internship & Summer Job Listings and Resources
  • Graduate School, Financial Aid, & Testing Information
  • Employer Literature (Annual Reports, Brochures, etc.)

Mock Interviews

Mock interviews provide students with an excellent opportunity to practice and hone their interviewing skills. Interviews for graduate school admission and employment opportunities can be conducted and videotaped. Then the student and advisor will review and critique the interview together. To schedule a mock interview, contact Career Services.

Graduate & Professional School Information

Career Services has graduate school directories, rankings, registration materials for entrance exams, testing study guides and information about financial aid, fellowships and grants. Advance planning will allow students to be better prepared for the application process. Students are encouraged to visit the office early in order to learn more about entrance exams (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MCAT, etc.) which are required for applying to graduate and professional institutions. Some registration deadlines for entrance exams are scheduled very early in the year.

You are also strongly encouraged to have ongoing discussions with faculty advisors, mentors and pre-professional advisors concerning the pursuit of an advanced degree consistent with your short and long range goals.

Reference Service

Students and alumni can establish files of their employment and graduate school references within our office. Once your file is established, you can arrange for materials to be sent to employers and graduate schools. References are typically held for 5 years after graduation. Materials are sent out, free of charge, up to 4 months after a student's graduation; after that time, there is a fee. Contact our office to learn more about this service.

On-Campus Recruiting

Each year dozens of various organziations come to OWU to speak with students.  All upcoming visits are advertised to all students (unless a given employer is seeking only students with a certain major or other specific qualification). Career Services offers 3 different on-campus opportunities to prospective employers:

1. Lobby Table during the student's lunch hour in the Campus Center.

2. Information session (day or evening) in one of the rooms in the Campus Center.

3. Actual Interviews, which are pre-arranged and conducted in Career Services interview

    rooms.

If a student is unable to keep an interview appointment, he/she MUST notify Career Services 24 hours in advance of the scheduled interview. If a student misses an interview without advance notice, he/she must schedule an appointment with the Director of Career Services and write a letter of apology to the recruiter to retain on-campus interviewing privileges.

Volunteer Career Assistance Network (VCAN)

This network allows OWU volunteers to serve as career mentors for current students and alumni by answering questions about their positions, fields, or geographic locations. OWU's alumni networking system, the Volunteer Career Assistance Network or VCAN has more than 700 members from a wide variety of career fields.  Students are encouraged to arrange an appointment to talk about the network as they are exploring their career options.
