Faculty and Staff
Career Services considers the partnership between our office and the faculty members at Ohio Wesleyan to be an important part of helping students achieve their career-related objectives. Career Services welcomes opportunities to work with OWU faculty at any time to enhance the diversity and quality of career development and job search offerings to students. As a matter of routine practice, our staff encourage students to also seek career advice from faculty members.
Mission Statement
Career Services facilitates CONNECTIONS between EDUCATION and CAREER JOURNEYS. From exploring majors and summer opportunities, to investigating graduate/professional schools and employment options, staff members offer individual advising and outreach events to help students clarify their skills, interests, and values, as well as acquiring techniques that can be used throughout their career development.

Services and Resources We Offer...
Search by Major
This is an extensive list of links sorted by specific OWU majors; students can click on their major or interest area, read about career fields related to that major and also search for internships and jobs. We welcome faculty input and recommendations for additional links.
Just go to "Search by Major"
OWU Career Link
This web based system allows OWU students 24/7 access to post a resume (or multiple targeted resumes) for prospective employers to review. It also provides students the opportunity to review an extensive and continually updated listing of jobs and internships. All OWU students are able to access this service simply by registering with Career Services (there is no cost). Note: There is a special Faculty registration component to this system. Faculty members who register can access targeted position listings they may wish to share with their students. Just click here to register.
VAULT On-Line Career Information System
An easy-to-use, nearly comprehensive, web based career information system. Included among the many resources are up-to-date information profiles on hundreds of career fields, job and company networking boards, updated profiles on 2,500 companies and organizations, occupational profiles, career survey results; and highly relevant, to-the-point career advice from the people actually doing the job! All OWU students are able to access this service at no cost.
Career Advising
Professional staff members typically see 850-1,000 annual appointments, not counting 300-400 walk-ins over the course of the academic year. All students are welcome to schedule appointments, regardless of their specific interests or concerns. Staff members assist students in a variety of areas, including exploring potential majors, resume and cover letter reviews, job search assistance, preparing for the interview process, considering graduate school options, graduate school application and essay assistance, and other career planning questions. Students can also drop in for resume reviews with our trained Career Services Interns.
We encourage students to assess their interests, skills, and values in relation to their career decisions. Assessment instruments (The Campbell Interest and Skill Survey and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) are offered to help students gain a clearer direction.
Workshops and Seminars
Workshops and seminars can be arranged by request with Career Services in connection with departments, classes, campus organizations, or residential living units. If you are interested in discussing and scheduling a presentation, please contact the Career Services office, at least 2 weeks in advance, to discuss available topics or to incorporate your needs and ideas into a customized workshop.

On-Site Career Library
Career Services maintains an updated Career Library, which is located in our office in the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, Room 324. The library is organized and labeled for self-service and contains the following kinds of information:
- Free Informational Handouts
(including materials on resume writing, cover letter development, and interviewing) - Career Exploration Materials
- Job Search Resources
- Employment Opportunity Listings and Resources
- Internship & Summer Job Listings and Directories
- Graduate School, Financial Aid, & Testing Information
- Employer Literature (Annual Reports, Brochures, etc.)
Mock Interviews
Mock interviews provide students with an excellent opportunity to practice and hone their interviewing skills. Interviews for graduate school admission and employment opportunities can be conducted and videotaped. Then the student and staff member will review and critique the interview together. Each year our staff conducts 45-70 mock interviews with students and alumni.
Graduate School Information
Career Services has graduate school directories, rankings, registration materials for entrance exams, testing study guides and information about financial aid, fellowships, and grants. Advanced planning will allow students to be better prepared for the application process. Students are encouraged to visit the office early in order to learn more about entrance exams (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MCAT, etc.) which are required for applying to graduate and professional institutions. Some registration deadlines for entrance exams are scheduled very early in the year.
We also strongly encourage students to have frequent and ongoing discussions with faculty advisors, mentors and pre-professional advisors concerning the pursuit of an advanced degree.
Reference Service
Students and alumni can establish files of their employment and graduate school references within our office. References are held for up to 5 years after graduation. Materials are sent out free of charge up to 4 months after a student's graduation; after that time, there is a fee for each request to send materials from our office. Interested students should contact our office to learn more about this service.
Career Fair & Other Special Programs
Beginning Fall 2005, Career Services began hosting a combined annual Career Fair & Graduate/Professional School Expo.
Career Services also participates in a number of other specialized off-campus career fairs each year (including the Ohio Foundation of Independent College's CareerFest, Work Chicago, Career Conferences of America, & TeachOhio). Details about upcoming events are advertised on OWU Career Link, in the Daily Bulletin, and in other advertising resources.
Volunteer Career Assistance Network (VCAN)
VCAN is a continually growing networking resource populated with alumni and sometimes parents of OWU students. Currently, there are approximately 700 active individuals who make up the VCAN network. Interested students can access this listing by scheduling an appoinment with our office.
On-Campus Recruiting
Each year dozens of different companies and organizations come to OWU to speak with students. All upcoming visits are widely advertised (unless a given employer is seeking only students with a certain major or other specific limiting qualifications). Career Services offers employers 3 different on-campus visit opportunities:
1. Lobby Table during the student's lunch hour in the Campus Center.
2. Information Session (day or evening) in the Campus Center.
3. Actual Interviews (conducted in Career Services interview rooms).
