THE HISTORIAN ("the journal"), a scholarly journal published
by Phi Alpha Theta, Inc., is pleased to commission your review of the
above-named book for publication in an
upcoming issue of THE HISTORIAN. You agree to read the entire book (unless
otherwise instructed and authorized in the case of a lengthy multivolume
reference work) and prepare a review of the prescribed length in a timely
manner and to submit it for editing by the above indicated date. You understand
that your review will be copy edited for clarity, conformity to house style,
good taste, and accuracy by the editorial staff at the Book Review Section
Office and by the Editorial Office. You
agree to work with THE HISTORIAN in good faith and in a timely manner to
resolve any differences regarding changes to the review proposed by the journal
or by you. The journal may make minor
editorial changes on its own in conformity with standing policy and house
style, but will seek to notify the reviewer of
other changes that it proposes to make. The journal generally resolves
issues of style and spelling in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style and the Random House College
Dictionary, in addition to its own house style, which takes
precedence. The journal will attempt to
provide two off prints of your review free of charge, provided you return the self-addressed mailing label,
which is enclosed for this purpose, with two hard copies of your review,
diskette or CD-ROM, this signed commissioning agreement, and the
Copyright Assignment form on the reverse.
This offer of commission shall not be construed as a guarantee of
publication by the journal.

either electronically or in print, in whole or in part, and that no agreement
to publish it is outstanding, that you have the legal right to offer it for
publication in the journal, and that no part of the review has been previously
assigned or encumbered. You further represent and warrant that the review
contains no material that is defamatory, libelous, or obscene; infringes the copyright or other
legal right of others; or that would otherwise expose the journal, editors, or
publishers to liability. Should the
review contain material that requires written permission for inclusion, such
permission shall be obtained at your expense, in a form suitable to THE
HISTORIAN, and submitted with the review. These warranties and representations shall
survive the termination of this agreement.
By submitting your book review for publication in the
