Epsilon Chapter History


    1863     -      The Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi is chartered on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University. The charter was granted by Alpha Chapter, Yale University, with the recommendation of Delta Chapter, Marietta College.
                
    1865     -      Epsilon Chapter merges with the Gamma Chapter of Sigma Chi, thus disappearing from campus.
                
    1913     -      The Epsilon Chapter is rechartered. The effort is led by H.E. Chenoweth, Benjamin Young, and Milton Williams.
                
    1971     -      The national officers of Alpha Sigma Phi removed the Epsilon Chapter from campus due to its overall decline.
                
    Fall 1990     -      Dale Eilrich, a senior at Ohio Wesleyan, approaches the university about the possibility of starting a new fraternity on the campus. Eilrich approaches the national officers of Alpha Sigma Phi about the possibility of re-establishing the Epsilon Chapter.
                
    Apr. 1991     -      The group Brothers of a Social Society (BOSS) is formed by Dale Eilrich, Scott Gallagher, and Dave Southworth. The group is formed to offer men an alternative to other fraternities already on campus.
                
    Mar. 5, 1992     -      The BOSS group petitions to the University for permission to become a colony of Alpha Sigma Phi and begin the colonization process to become a recognized fraternity.
                
    Jun. 26, 1992     -      The university denies Alpha Sigma Phi permission to become a colony.
                
    Aug. 24, 1992     -      The members of BOSS decide to continue their attempt to become a national fraternity despite the rejection of the recent petition.
                
    Dec. 11, 1992     -      Some representatives of Alpha Sigma Phi, including national office holders, meet with university officials to discuss the potential for the BOSS group being allowed to colonize.
                
    Jan. 11, 1993     -      The BOSS group votes to pursue membership with a national fraternity without University recognition, based on the opinion that the sought-after recognition is not forthcoming.
                
    Jan. 23, 1993     -      At the national conference, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity votes to recognize the BOSS group as a colony. The fraternity sets forth a necessary membership level for the group to attain to re-charter the Epsilon Chapter.
                
    Mar. 5, 1993     -      The BOSS group, having met the membership requirement (the present campus fraternity average) to charter is given permission by the national officers of Alpha Sigma Phi to re-charter the Epsilon Chapter.
                
    Mar. 19, 1993     -      The Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi is rechartered as members of the BOSS group initiate into the fraternity.
                
    Mar. 29, 1993     -      The University's Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council pass a resolution to not support the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi since they have gone against University policy.
                
    Feb. 14, 1996     -      The Interfraternity Council votes to make Epsilon Chapter an associate member of the IFC.
                
    Apr. 2, 1996     -      Epsilon is formally recognized by Ohio Wesleyan University as an associate member of IFC.
                
    Feb. 11, 1997     -      The Interfraternity Council votes to make Epsilon Chapter a regular member of the IFC.
                
     Feb. 28, 1997     -      Epsilon is recognized as a regular member of IFC by the university.
                
    July 16, 2001          Epsilon returns to life on the hill, moving into 9 Williams Drive.
