This is an awesome laptop that worked for a long time really reliably.

It now gives the following error:

                **** Bad RTC Battery ****
                **** Bad check sum (CMOS) ****
               Check system. Then press [F1] key.             

Here is what happens: When you plug the power adapter in, and press the "Power" button, it turns on. It shows the logo "Toshiba" written in red color, splash screen at first (which also has the message to press f-12 to go to boot device selection menu written at the bottom). From any boot device that you use, it then gives the error I mentioned above. If you press F1, it takes you to bios setup and no matter what changes I tried in boot order etc, whenever I booted up again, it gave me the same above error.

I am no expert in computers, but I did a some of research online and talked to a Toshiba service center on the phone and here is what I learnt out of all that - One of the following two things is wrong. Either the CMOS battery is really dead, in which case it is not too expensive to replace it if you can do it yourself. Otherwise the motherboard is out and can be replaced for approx. $150-200 or so in some Toshiba exchange program at an authorized Toshiba service center. This is what I understood from my research and I do not guarantee any of the above prices or anything. Just want to be clear on that.

I think the following about its parts-

- the lcd screen is good. So if you have another similar laptop with burnt out screen and if you can swap this lcd out and use it, thats great for you. I have heard that burnt-out screens can cost around $700 bucks to replace. This will be much cheaper ;) if you are successful.

- the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive seems to be working. I don't know the speeds of either.

- the floppy drive seems to be working.

- I think there is no problem with the hard drive either. I don't know its capacity. Probably 15 or 20Gb.

- the touchpad should work too.

- the keyboard has the following keys missing: H, J, and Alt (right-of-the-spacebar). It should be working.

- it does have a battery, but I don't expect it to have much juice. It would probably last 20-30 minutes on a full charge.

Again all of the above about its parts is what my impression is and although I have tried to be as accurate and honest as possible, I may be wrong. 

The original specs of the laptop are as follows: Intel Celeron processor 1.1Ghz, 256Mb SDRAM, DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. 14" or 15" (I am not sure which one of the two) LCD screen.
