Autoshaping with grain vs. water USs
An interesting comparison of a pigeon's keypecking CR following
autoshaping with a 5-s grain US compared to a 5-s water US. For each type
of US, the video shows two normal speed clips and one slow motion clip.
The different behaviors demonstrate that the nature of the CR can depend
on the type of US. Pigeons tend to peck at grain with an open beak and
closed eyes, and they drink water with relatively closed beak and open
eyes. Thus, the pigeon appears to be responding to the CS as though the
CS were a substitute for the US (see Jenkins & Moore, 1973).
